Remote Oral Exam Platform

The Problem: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Board of Radiology (ABR) needed to rapidly transform its high-stakes, in-person oral certification exam into a secure and seamless remote experience. The core challenge was to ensure business continuity and uphold the integrity of the exam while reducing user stress and travel risk.

• Result: The previous in-person, multi-day exam was no longer viable.
• Core Issue: There was a need to design a platform that not only mirrored the previous exam experience but also solved for new remote-specific constraints like identity verification and internet connection stability.

I served as the lead designer on this critical project, responsible for the end-to-end design and user experience.

• My Contribution: I collaborated closely with a senior designer and a broad group of physician board members to translate their expertise into a user-centric digital product.

My approach was to move beyond the provided wireframes and strategically adapt the in-person experience for a remote setting.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Every meeting was a learning opportunity, as I worked closely with physician board members to understand the nuances of the exam and gather feedback from a variety of medical disciplines.
• Problem Solving: I identified and solved for new user pain points unique to a remote experience, such as designing a system for proof of identity and a resilient workflow in case of internet connection loss.
• Iterative Design: We iterated quickly, building on the foundation of the previous in-person exam and consistently incorporating feedback to deliver a simple, user-friendly solution.

I designed a remote oral exam platform that streamlined complex user flows for both examinees and examiners. The final solution was a simple, user-friendly web experience that provided the necessary tools to uphold the integrity of the exam while significantly reducing the stress and logistical burden on participants.

This project delivered a high-impact solution that has enabled thousands of physicians to continue their certification process.

• The Result: The remote oral exam has been successfully taken by thousands of physicians, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback has confirmed its success in reducing user stress and increasing accessibility.
